Portland is home to some fierce doom bands, and Usnea, one of its best, have released “Eidolons and the Increate” from their forthcoming Portals Into Futility. Featuring bruising riffs and the contrast between reverb-laden vocals and scrappy rasps, the track lurches with the gait of an injured dinosaur. Add in psychedelic visuals, and this is one video you can’t miss.
“Eidolons and the Increate” ebbs from a murkiness in the future where humanity has fallen from a technological grace, the sun is dying, and callous brutality is the way of the land. Mirroring the dark psychedelia of its source of inspiration – Gene Wolfe’s Shadow of the Torturer – it is a meditation on the self-destructive conceits of humanity.
Portals Into Futility is out September 8 on Relapse Records. Pre-order it here!
