Top 10 Metal Stories Of 2014 On SkullsNBones!

There is no question that 2014 was one of the biggest years in heavy music in a very long time. From the death of one of the most iconic individuals ever to step foot on a stage, to legendary bands releasing some of the best material they’ve ever created, this year has shown that the heavy music world still has a very real and relevant impact on the daily lives of most metalheads.

For the first time I felt there was so much happening in a year that I would actually be able to put together a list of stories that were the most impactful on the scene and on our site. I left my opinion out of the list making and relied purely on statistics and what came out of it is a list that makes complete sense. More than making sense, this list is cool because it’s like ‘viewers choice awards’ without knowing that you were voting… you clicked the links and those were your votes. Below are definitely some of the defining moments of the year for metal. Grab a glass of whisky and a cold beer and enjoy the Top 10 Stories of 2014:

10. DAVE BROCKIE AKA ODERUS URUNGUS MEMORIAL SERVICE AND VIKING FUNERAL FOOTAGE IS HERE!

DAVE BROCKIE AKA ODERUS URUNGUS MEMORIAL SERVICE AND VIKING FUNERAL FOOTAGE IS HERE!

Anything I could say about the passing of the great Oderus would be an understatement, but we all know it was a huge black mark on the life of heavy music. The world lost one of the most creative people of our time. I hate that a memorial has a place in this list, but it’s not a list of top ten happy bullshit stories now is it? This is was an impactful moment in our lives and the photos / story of Dave Brockie‘s memorial were very moving. It’s one of the stories that will stay with us for a long time. Read the story >>

9. SLIPKNOT: “THE NEGATIVE ONE” SINGLE STREAMING ONLINE!

SLIPKNOT: “THE NEGATIVE ONE” SINGLE STREAMING ONLINE!

Slipknot‘s digital marketing people did a fantastic job of hyping up the release of the first highly-anticipated new track. It had every fan with the “S” tattoo foaming at the mouth and everyone in the media chomping at the bit to share the new music with the world, be it good, bad or ‘eh’. Turns out the track wasn’t half bad and the world erupted- and so did the popularity of our story about it. The site almost crashed when we posted the song because we were among the first to have it and let me tell you, it’s a stressful day when you’re trying to grab more bandwidth from your service provider in real time against a story that is spreading like wildfire across the interwebs. We have bandwidth to spare now so fear not about clicking through to check out the story for yourself if you missed it. It was one of the biggest real-time spikes we’ve ever had… and we’re only at number nine… Read the story >>

8. VOLBEAT: “LOLA MONTEZ” VIDEO RELEASED!

VOLBEAT: “LOLA MONTEZ” VIDEO RELEASED!

I am honestly surprised that a music video made it into the top ten posts lists. I’m even more surprised when I think about how it wasn’t even an exclusive music video release. We beat everyone to the punch and with the amount of love SkullsNBones gives to Volbeat it’s not surprising that the fans would be paying attention to us for the release. We actually pride ourselves on getting videos up before anyone else but we don’t really bloat about it. It’s nice to know some people are paying attention! If you missed the video, check it out! It was more popular than Slipknot‘s new song! Watch the video >>

7. CHRIS ADLER ON HIS MUSICAL BEGINNINGS, PASSION FOR DRUMMING AND MORE!

CHRIS ADLER ON HIS MUSICAL BEGINNINGS, PASSION FOR DRUMMING AND MORE!

We love Lamb of God. You love Lamb of God. In my living room I have one thing hanging on the wall; the Lamb of God flag. Why is that? Mainly because my walls are cement and it’s incredibly hard to hang anything on them… but also, because Lamb of God is one of the most important bands in the heavy music world. Their style of groove metal is recognized worldwide as the backbone of the genre, and they continue to revolutionize the sound with every record. When Chris Adler sat down with Guitar Center to talk about his musical beginnings and what drumming does for him, we had no idea that we would be the metal outlet the band (among others) would choose to share it. 6. JUDAS PRIEST PUT ON A LEGENDARY SHOW AT BARCLAYS CENTER IN BROOKLYN!

JUDAS PRIEST PUT ON A LEGENDARY SHOW AT BARCLAYS CENTER IN BROOKLYN!

It really doesn’t get much more legendary than Judas Priest. Or does it? Well, maybe when you have exclusive photos by the iconic Jimmy Duff you kind of add fuel to the ‘legendary’ fire! We posted photos from a legend photographing a legend. It’s fucking awesome. Mark’s quick review isn’t half bad and the video proves that every word of it is true. This was just a fucking good post and 100% worthy of a spot on this list. I’m glad everyone out there thought so too… I’m just surprised it was more popular than Mark’s interview with the band!  Read / View the story >>

5. MEGADETH REFUSES TO PLAY FESTIVAL IF SALMON IS BEING SERVED / REFUSE TO TAKE THE STAGE WHILE SECOND STAGE IS MAKING NOISE

MEGADETH REFUSES TO PLAY FESTIVAL IF SALMON IS BEING SERVED / REFUSE TO TAKE THE STAGE WHILE SECOND STAGE IS MAKING NOISE

It makes me really fucking sad that this post made the list. I mean, I am the one who posted it, but I’m kind of pissed off that of the thousands of posts that went up this year, Megadave acting like a douche would be in the number five spot. Alas, you guys clicked on the link so I guess I was justified in posting it, I just wish there would be more clicks on ‘check out this brand new band that needs your support because they could change the face of music as we know it’. Well, anyway, if you want to read about Dave Mustaine being Dave Mustaine, be my guest. Read the story >>

4. SEPULTURA: “ROOTS BLOODY ROOTS” RARE DEMO POSTED ONLINE!

SEPULTURA: “ROOTS BLOODY ROOTS” RARE DEMO POSTED ONLINE!

From a post I feel annoyed is on the list to a post that I am incredibly proud is on the list. Sepul-fucking-tura and a rare demo recording of one of the band’s most iconic songs. I honestly don’t have words for how exciting this was, and still is. If you missed this story, stop whatever the fuck you’re doing and click through to hear it. It’s a must for any fan, and a realization to every aspiring band that we all start out with recordings like this. It’s pretty awesome when you think about how we all start the same as young bands and to think about how we all go through the same hurdles.  Some of us just become legends… Listen to the song >>

3. ZAKK WYLDE, PHIL ANSELMO AND REX BROWN PERFORM PANTERA’S “I’M BROKEN” IN TEXAS!

ZAKK WYLDE, PHIL ANSELMO AND REX BROWN PERFORM PANTERA’S “I’M BROKEN” IN TEXAS!

One short of what we all assume would be the lineup for a Pantera reunion with Zakk as the fill-in for Dime, Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown joined Black Label Society on stage in Texas to perform “I’m Broken.” We only get to see the video… but that’s enough for me to have chills, and it was enough to be the number three most popular story in 2014, and rightfully so. In a word, it’s “powerful.” I honestly which I could have been there to see it personally.  Witness this for yourself. Watch the video >>

2. MICHAEL BISHOP RETURNS AS BLOTHAR TO GWAR!

MICHAEL BISHOP RETURNS AS BLOTHAR TO GWAR!

The top two spots are held by bands that made this list twice, and that’s no surprise given the iconic nature of each. This time, the GWAR post is a really positive one. It’s GWAR‘s set from their annual GWAR-B-Q without Brockie, but it’s an awesome memorial to the singer and a positive way of immortalizing the legend. It makes me proud to be part of a site where the second most popular story of the entire year is about GWAR. Fucking fantastic. Take a few minutes to check out the video of their whole set and the photos of Blothar! Watch the video >>

1. JUDAS PRIEST: “CROSSFIRE” EXCLUSIVE SONG PREVIEW IS HERE!

JUDAS PRIEST: “CROSSFIRE” EXCLUSIVE SONG PREVIEW IS HERE!

It was just a piece of a song with some commentary, but sometimes that’s all you need to have an incredibly powerful story about a legendary band like Judas Priest. Topping the list with so many clicks that this story alone could be a website deserving of respect, this one went the distance and proved that Priest is as important as ever. The album rocked the foundation of metal in my opinion, proving that Priest can go back to their roots and produce a record that fucking kills, and this song was just a taste of what was to come. This story got more hits than any other post on the site all year.  See what was the most popular thing on SkullsNBones in 2014. Watch the video >>
