Earlier this week, Abrams Publishing released The Merciless Book of Metal Lists written by Howie Abrams and Sacha Jenkins and this definitely a book you will want to add to your collection.
I was estatic when given the chance to write a review on this book. Growing up in the 80’s, my friends and I always debate about what our top 5 bands are, who’s a better drummer, vocalist, bassist and so on and it always seems that our opinions vary and even sometimes cause heated debates. Now Howie and Sacha have written an awesome book to stir the pot and cause even more debate.
Kerry King wrote the forward for The Merciless Book of Metal Lists and Phil Anselmo wrote the afterword. There are numerous other contributions from many of your favorite bands including Scott Ian (Anthrax), Gary Holt (Exodus), Max Cavalera (Sepultura/Soulfly) and Dan Lilker (Nuclear Assault/Brutal Truth). Also contributing to the list are several well known industry innovators including Jon & Marsha Zazula, Metal Blade Records CEO Brian Slagel, Eddie Trunk, former Roadrunner Records (current Nuclear Blast) A&R guru Monte Conner and more.
As I read through the book, I was dying to get to the next list and at while at first I found myself strongly disagreeing with some of the choices and at one point even thinking the book was favoring Black Sabbath and that no other bands had a shot at #1 in their respective categories. However upon introspection, I realized that if I was writing a book of my favorites, Rob Halford and Judas Priest would have been the honorees. The lists cover basically every genre of metal and I really enjoyed reading about areas of metal I really hadn’t given much thought to or been open to in the past. All in all this books covers practically everything you can possibly imagine.
Author Howie Abrams who grew up in NYC has been around the music scene for many, many years and carries the torch for Metal and Hardcore. He is the co-founder of the influential hard music label In-Effect Records, where he signed bands such as Agnostic Front, Nuclear Assault and Sick of it All. During his stint at Roadrunner Records, Howie signed such great bands as Vision of Disorder, Madball and Shelter to name a few.
Author Sacha Jenkins, who also grew up in New York City, loves heavy music as well. He has produced books about both hip-hop and graffiti and has done work in the television industry as well. He is currently playing guitar in a band called The White Mandingoes with Darryl Jenifer of the legendary Bad Brains.
