Suffocation are close to wrapping up their farewell tour for original vocalist, Frank Mullen. One of the stops on the tour was at The Forge in Joliet, IL. Coincidentally, it was almost exactly a year ago that I shot Suffocation at The Forge with Kevin Muller as vocalist. Knowing that this is Frank’s farewell tour, I couldn’t miss this show.
One of the things that Frank is known for is, “the best banter in death metal”. As expected, he did not disappoint. During one of his moments of banter, Frank shared a personal moment with the crowd that he was adopted. Frank also shared that he just met his birth mother, who happens to live in Illinois. It was a really touching moment that you don’t expect to see/hear in the death metal community. Throughout the set, Frank continued to talk with the crowd. Looking at the faces of Derek, Terrance, Charlie, and Eric, you could tell this tour was a bittersweet moment for the band.
Suffocation certainly sounded great and delivered a brutal set that had two of my personal favorite songs included – “Effigy of the Forgotten” and “Pierced from Within”.
Frank will certainly be missed as the frontman for Suffocation. We wish him well on his future endeavors.
