Yesterday the metal world was rocked when video surfaced of Phil Anselmo raising a Nazi salute, and shouting “White Power” to the audience at this year’s Dimebash in California. If it wasn’t for the clip below, some of us may not have believed it, but it’s there for all eyes to see, and it’s disturbing on so many levels. Phil is, like for many of you, an icon in my eyes. Pantera both saved and changed my life, but this….this video below is unacceptable.
Here was Phil’s response: “Ok folks, I’ll own this one, but dammit, I was joking, and the “inside joke of the night” was because we were drinking fucking white wine, hahaha… Of all fucking things. Some of y’all need to thicken up your skin. There’s plenty of fuckers to pick on with a more realistic agenda. I fucking love everyone, I fucking loathe everyone, and that’s that. No apologies from me. PHA ’16.”
Today Machine Head‘s Robb Flynn posted this video below in response to Phil’s explanation, and what he saw that night at Dimebash. He mentions that there was no white wine backstage, although the picture above says otherwise, and Phil even used the “N” word to his face earlier that night. It’s a powerful response by the Machine Head front man, and one that needed to be said by someone. This has become a major talking point between metal fans this week, and it should be. Phil may be a God in our eyes for the music he’s created in our scene, but he’s still human, and humans make mistakes. This…this was a MAJOR mistake. An unforgivable mistake for many, including Robb, who lets it all out in the clip below. What are your thoughts on all of this?
