EP Review: Psykopath, “Primal Instinct”

Thrash metal is a symphony to my senses. It has forever caressed me with its crescendo of mayhem, lightning fast riffs, raging drums, and frantic notes churned into an intoxicating cocktail. With this in mind, I was not disappointed by Primal Instinct from Norwegian thrashers Psykopath.

Primal Instinct features only three songs, and damn, I want more. Produced by Yngve Andersen (Blood Command, Bokassa, Ondt Blood) and mixed by former Metallica producer Flemming Rasmussen, Psykopath create a swirling, nightmarish sound that captivates the endorphins and crushes the soul.

“Lethal Introspect” is all-enveloping with demon-furious vocals and full-speed fretwork. It is pit-worthy, horns-up bedlam. “Armageddon,” with its sharp metallic attack, captures the crush-and-maim style of the thrash genre. Pulverizing riff changes during the title track open the hellish gates to a dirge of utter defiance.

Psykopath deliver neck-snapping goodness with Primal Instinct.

Primal Instinct is out August 24 on Loyal Blood Records.
