Three-piece powerhouse, PHILM, came through Brooklyn on Monday night, and left jaws on the floor at Saint Vitus Bar. After being a fan of the band since the release of “Harmonic” in 2012, this was my first opportunity to catch them live, and it was one of the most impressive shows I’ve ever seen. Dave Lombardo, Gerry Nestler and Pancho Tomaselli have created a sound unlike anything we’ve ever heard before, and the execution live was flawless. It’s one thing to hear the music on an album, but to see and feel it live takes their sound to another level. The legendary Dave Lombardo has only gotten better with age, Gerry’s vocals and guitar skills command your attention, and Pancho Tomaselli completes the trio’s punch with extraordinary skills that come from a lifetime of jamming with musicians of all styles. While the masters only performed for a little over an hour, I could have watched them play all night long. The amount of talent and passion on stage was mesmerizing, and the guys were having an absolute blast on stage together, which only added to the unforgettable night. When asked how it was the next day, I could only respond “I’ll never miss PHILM again.” Two days later I’m still riding the high from that gig, and thankfully, I get to see it again next week. PHILM, consider me hooked!
