OPETH ANNOUNCES ALBUM TITLE & TRACK LISTING – BUT THERE’S A CATCH…

mikael

There’s good news and bad news. The good news? The new Opeth album is coming and it’s called Pale Communication! There are 8 tracks of what will surely be an exceptional musical performance. A lot of people were not impressed with Opeth‘s 2011 record, Heritage. I thought it was fantastic and a great addition to the band’s repertoire, but for some, it was a bit too light.

So this leads me to the catch:  The new record “finds Opeth once again challenging the boundaries of extreme music” according to the unnamed writer at Roadrunner Records who initially posted the news. And according to Mikael Åkerfeldt, “I wanted to do something more melodic with this album… there’s stronger vocal melodies and more melodies overall… I was pretty consistent with that frame of mind throughout the writing process.”

Anyone who can read knows what that means and while I am personally looking forward to some masterful songwriting, I’m also anticipating some serious backlash from those who were hoping that Opeth would pull out another brutal metal album.  Obviously I’m speculating that it won’t be heavy based on the little evidence I have, but if Mikael “wanted to do something more melodic with this album,” then it would be more melodic than the last.  For me this is fine, but I am concerned for the fans who were disappointed with the last album.

I can honestly say I’m more excited than ever to hear what these guys have up their sleeves.  If you’re a fan of creative, moving music, then Opeth will never disappoint.  If you’re a fan of the brutality of everything from many years past, then there’s a very good chance you’re not going to be into it.  Even I thought the new record was going to be heavier until now.  Only time will tell I suppose…  Here’s the track listing for the new record:

Pale Communication (Release date is June 17th)

1. Eternal Rains Will Come
2. Cusp of Eternity
3. Moon Above, Sun Below
4. Elysian Woes
5. Goblin
