Motorhead Confirmed for 2012 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival

Motorhead Confirmed for 2012 Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival

But does that make the festival worth it?

Legendary NWOBHM pioneers Motörhead will be a part of the 2012 lineup for the annual Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival this summer, and they’ll share the stage with acts like Anthrax, Slayer, and Slipknot. Motörhead just finished co-headlining Gigantour with Megadeth, and frontman Lemmy Kilmister will also participate on a Ronnie James Dio tribute album to be released later this year. Given his extremely busy schedule, the quality of Motörhead concerts (through the roof), and his advanced age (older than my grandmother), I’m becoming increasingly sure that Lemmy Kilmister is actually immortal.

What I’m not sure about is whether or not to bother with this festival. There are definitely some big names attached to it, and if you missed the boat on Slayer at the Big Four, Anthrax with Testament and Death Angel, or Motörhead on Gigantour, it might make sense to go. Otherwise, there’s a lot of (expensive!) chaff in with that wheat — Whitechapel, High On Fire, and an assortment of other bands of questionable quality are playing alongside the legends. Additionally, the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival is a bit of a misnomer — it’s much more a tour than a festival, even if every show takes place all day.

Basically, I’m on the fence about this one. Perhaps I’ve been spoiled by the European festival experience, but the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival is not exactly calling my name. Concerts are loads of fun, and I would never try to dissuade someone from attending one, but unless any of the bands are on your concert bucket list, you might want to spend your money elsewhere.
