2015 was a massive year for heavy metal! Whether it was the albums that came out, or the tours that followed, it seemed like every week brought us something new, and that absolutely rules! Now that the year is over, I’ve already posted my favorite albums of 2015 and it’s time to look forward to 2016! We already know that we have new albums coming from Testament, Crowbar, Kvelertak, Killswitch Engage, Dream Theater, Abbath, Fleshgod Apocalypse, The Dillinger Escape Plan, DevilDriver, Megadeth, Moonsorrow, Exmortus, Omnium Gatherum, Vektor, Rotting Christ, Gorguts, Skeletonwitch, Darkthrone, Rotten Sound and others, but I’ve compiled a list for you below of the albums I’m most looking forward to! If this doesn’t get you excited for 2016, I don’t know what will! I say bring on the new year already!
Of course I’m going to start with Metallica right? They are my favorite band after all! We’ve known for a while that they are in the studio now, and we’ve heard a snippet of new material, so unless something horrible happens, we will be getting a new Metallica record in 2016, and that makes me the happiest kid on the planet!
Gojira are one of the few bands that get better with each album, and if they can top “L’Enfant Sauvage” from 2012, my head might explode. That album is flawless in my opinion, but if anyone can top it, Gojira can. They are simply that good, and I expect another masterpiece from the French metal giants next year.
The Swedish lords are set to release their eighth studio album in 2016, and my ears are ready. Since the release of “Koloss” back in 2012, they’ve been touring their asses off, but now they are back to writing new music and just like with their previous material, it’s sure to make your head spin. They never disappoint, and from what I’ve heard about the new material, that trend will continue next year.
2011’s “Worship Music” was an instant classic, and from what the band has said so far, the new album is even better. In my opinion, Anthrax are like fine wine; they get better with age. They don’t bullshit; if they say it’s going to be an amazing record, I don’t doubt them at all. Bring on “For All Kings” now!
Swedish giants Amon Amarth will be releasing their tenth studio album next year and I’m beyond stoked. Every new record brings absolutely punishing tunes and a new album will also bring new tour dates, which is good news for everyone around the world. Let’s see what these Vikings have in store for us in 2016.
Corrosion Of Conformity
Ever since Pepper rejoined Corrosion Of Conformity, the fans have been begging for a new album and it’s coming next year. They will be entering the studio in a few months, and we can expect a riff filled record in the fall. If you’ve seen these guys live this year you can tell the chemistry is stronger than ever, and I expect the record to showcase that perfectly. I absolutely can not wait for this to be in my ears.
“Abandon All Life” is an album that blew everyone’s minds in 2013, and Nails are set to release “You Will Never Be One Of Us” next year to their ever growing fan base. If they can bring the pissed off fury that they did on the last album, along with new tricks they’ve learned in the past few years, this record might steal the show in 2016.
Every Obscura release seems to blow my mind in a different way. Their musicianship is always incredible, the precision is not human, and from what we’ve heard so far from their upcoming album, it might be their best record yet. For a huge fan of this band like I am, those are HUGE words.
Neurosis have been pummeling ear drums for 30 years now, and from the shows I’ve seen them play recently they show no signs of slowing down. These legends are currently recording their new record as I type, and although you may lose hearing and other senses, it will be well worth it. I have a feeling this record will only add to their legendary status.
Okay, this may not be the most “metal” choice, but fuck it, the Deftones are fucking awesome, and I’m beyond ready to hear their new material. Chino has been killing it on the past few records, and after seeing them live recently, their energy is at an all time high. That should make for a very exciting listen for fans in 2016.
Okay, this may or may not come true, but TOOL is in the studio, and all signs point to us getting the highly anticipated album in 2016. They’ve been teasing a lot, performing snippets live, so hopefully … hopefully 2016 is the year we hear new Tool music. I’m keeping my fingers, toes, and all other body parts crossed that it happens.
