The legendary Morbid Angel kicked off their highly anticipated “Covenant 1993-2013” tour last week in Atlanta, and we were honored to have the show here in New York City this week. The show kicked off with powerful sets from Jotunheim, Vadimvon and Winter Nights, but it was evident that every fan was in attendance for one reason, and one reason only, the iconic Morbid Angel! Just knowing that we would be hearing “Covenant” in it’s entirety was enough to pack out the venue, but after the set everyone was left saying the same thing, “That was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.” From the beginning of their set to the end, the death metal Gods put on a historic set and it all began at 10:00pm when the lights went black!
Morbid Angel stepped onto the stage to a huge roar from the audience and quickly began their performance of “Covenant” with the classic opening track “Rapture.” With fans screaming every word and the pit in full motion, it was evident that this would be a show to remember. As they played through classic track after classic track, I was blown away at the perfection of the group. Some of the songs haven’t been played live in years, or have never been played before at all, but you would never know it by their performance. It’s rare for me to say this, but Morbid Angel was flawless. Absolutely flawless. After the performance of their historic album was over with “God Of Emptiness,” that would have been enough to have everyone go home happy, but they were not done. David Vincent briefly spoke about the band’s history and then they broke into one song from each of their previous albums to everyone’s delight. Hearing “Where the Slime Live” in person never gets old, but throw in tracks like “Ageless, Still I Am”, “Curse the Flesh”, “Immortal Rites” and “Fall from Grace,” and it was an onslaught of true death metal done right. It was blown away!
Morbid Angel are already legends in the death metal scene, but with this “Covenant 1993-2013” tour, they are reminding people of how they got their legendary status and they are in no way done. For a huge fan of this band like myself, I couldn’t have asked for a better show. As I mentioned, the band was flawless, the crowd’s energy was out of this world, and I was just like everyone else outside the venue afterwards saying “It was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.”
