METAL MARK’S TOP FIFTEEN METAL ALBUMS OF 2013!

It’s that time of the year again! December means that everyone here at SkullsNBones gets to look back at the year and put together our list of favorite releases. 2013 was packed with incredible album after incredible album, so this was probably the toughest list I’ve ever had to put up. I had a list of sixty two records, and somehow got it down to fifteen. A lot barely missed the cut, but it had to be done, and I’ll strongly stand by this list. Don’t get butt hurt if you’re favorite band is on here, because this is my opinion after all, but definitely check out these albums if you haven’t yet! So here ya go! My top fifteen albums of 2013! Enjoy!

#15: Battlecross – “War Of Will”

Any thoughts on whether or not Battlecross would suffer the “Sophomore slump” were quickly erased once “War Of Will” was released. Every track on this record shows tremendous growth and maturity in this young band, and the future is beyond bright for them! Whether you like old school or new school metal, Battlecross has it all and this record is a true showcase of that.

#14: Death Angel – “The Dream Calls for Blood”

Death Angel are already legends in every metal head’s mind, but after releasing classic album after classic album, can they keep doing it? 2010’s “Relentless Retribution” was an instant classic, and then “The Dream Calls for Blood” came out earlier this year, and everyone’s minds were blown. This is true thrash metal done right from start to finish. It’s just more proof that there is no stopping this band!

#13: Black Sabbath – “13”

Okay I know Bill Ward was not on this album, but it doesn’t take away from the amazing metal created by Ozzy, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler. Iommi proved that he is still THE riff genius, and with Geezer and Ozzy, “13” is full of new hits for Sabbath fans to love for years to come. All hail the mighty Sabbath!

#12: Arsis – “Unwelcome”

I’ve said it so many times on this site, but it’s worth saying again, Arsis is one of the most underrated metal bands ever. From the riffs to the solos to the rhythm section, this band is so packed full of talent it’s just unreal. “Unwelcome” continues their trend of unrelenting metal, including a masterful cover of “Sunglasses at Night,” so there’s no way that this album wouldn’t make it in my top list.

#11: Gorguts – “Colored Sands”

When Gorguts said they would be releasing their first studio album in twelve years, every metal fan got excited. Once “Colored Sands” was unleashed, every metal head bowed down. Luc Lemay is an extreme metal God, and proved it again with this album. There’s so much to take in, but after listening throughout the year, I still haven’t grasped the amount of awesome on it. It’s that damn good.

#10: The Black Dahlia Murder – “Everblack”

Since 2000, The Black Dahlia Murder has been pushing metal’s boundaries in their own way, and I’m a HUGE fan of their work. “Everblack” features some of their “catchiest” material, but also some of their best riffs and song writing in their career. Along with their live show, they are without question one of my favorite acts out there, and “Everblack” will easily keep me a fan for years to come.

#9: Immolation – “Kingdom of Conspiracy”

Anytime a new Immolation record is released, I stop my life and listen no matter what. Throughout their long career, they’ve continued to write some of the most devastating riffs out there, and “Kingdom of Conspiracy” is packed full of true death metal. It was their first ever concept record, but that didn’t change anything. This is a death metal record for the ages.

#8: Motorhead – “Aftershock”

Motorhead can simply do no wrong. With every album, you know exactly what to expect, yet the power of their music is just undeniable. Lemmy and the boys have released another classic in their history with “Aftershock,” and their signature sound continues to grow their fan base for generations after generations to come. There is only one Motorhead, and they still rule the world to this very day.

#7: Exhumed – “Necrocracy”

When you are in need of crushing death metal, look no further than Exhumed. They’ve continued their growth into one of the greats of death metal, and “Necrocracy” is one fans everywhere are still talking about. The album is high on everyone’s list for 2013, and it’s no surprise. This record is an absolute monster.

#6: Carcass – “Surgical Steel”

When it comes to one of the most anticipated albums of 2013, “Surgical Steel” was high on the list. Once it was unloaded to fans, we were all reminded why they are such a legendary band in our scene. From the song writing to the musicianship, Carcass made a loud and strong statement to the fans that they are back, and with the amazing response, I don’t see them going anywhere for many years!

#5: Suffocation – “Pinnacle Of Bedlam”

Right when I heard “Pinnacle Of Bedlam” for the first time in February, I knew this record would be in my top five for 2013. Being one of my favorite bands to ever exist, Suffocation has released another instant classic with this album. Whether you’re a fan of riffs to solos to brutal vocals, this CD has it all and more. Suffocation‘s status in this scene is well cemented in history, and this record only adds to their impressive legacy.

#4: Extol – “Self-titled”

2013 had a lot of bands return to the scene, but for me, Extol was the most exciting to find out. I’ve been a fan of this band’s work for over a decade, and their self-titled release this year is absolutely flawless. They’ve always had their own style, which was way ahead of it’s time, and the new material is exactly that. It has everything you want in a metal band and more, so check it out already and thank me later!

#3: Watain – “The Wild Hunt”

The mighty Watain released “The Wild Hunt” to a mixed response from fans, but for me, I think it’s a masterful album. Yes, it’s more “commercial” than what we’ve come to expect, but I feel it shows their progression as a band, and with songs like “They Rode On,” their fan base is only going to grow and their message will only reach more people. For me, that’s what Watain is about and they perfected it with this powerful record.

#2: Revocation – “Self Titled”

With each release, Revocation continues to blow my mind with their style of metal. For their age, their talent is at an unreal level, and this self-titled album showcases it perfectly. Their growth as musicians is quite obvious after one listen, and if they keep going at this pace, they will be considered among the best in metal in the next few years, and these guys truly deserve it for all of their hard work.

#1: Skeletonwitch – “Serpents Unleashed”

This choice shouldn’t surprise anyone who visits this site regularly. Skeletonwitch is one of my favorite bands on the planet, and with “Serpents Unleashed” they finally got their live sound on a record. Put the perfection of recording with their best material yet, and it’s no doubt this is my favorite album of the year. They have become a true metal powerhouse, and with this record, the ‘Witch has made a strong statement for many years to come. Support Thy Witch!
