Mastodon, Gojira and Kvelertak brought their massive tour through New York City last night and left no fan at Terminal 5 disappointed. All three bands have a unique sound and dedicated fan base, and to have them all on one bill is basically a metal head’s dream come true. It was no surprise that this show sold out, and the energy in the crowd was electric all night. At 7:30pm, Erlend from Kvelertak walked onto the stage with his infamous owl mask on his head, and we all knew that it was time to lose our minds. As they thrashed through their thirty minute set, the pit began to stir, crowd surfers were flying everywhere, and the band kept the energy high with their dynamic live show. During the set the crowd grew larger and larger, and the sold out feeling was becoming imminent, and as they closed with “Blodtørst,” you could tell that the fan’s were locked in for a long night of true metal. When it comes to opening sets, it just does not get much better than Kvelertak.
Still buzzing from the Norwegian rockers set, the Gojira banner dropped and a massive roar filled the venue. Once the French metal giants hit the stage, it was instant chaos. Their intensity on stage was just ridiculous, and as always, the precision on their instruments was at inhuman levels all night. From “The Heaviest Matter of the Universe” to “L’Enfant Sauvage” to “Backbone” and more, their set was packed with eight songs of fury that only this band can pull off. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Gojira is one of the greatest live bands to ever walk onto a stage, and they proved it again by destroying Terminal 5 last night. As a die hard fan, I was wanting a longer set, but after “Oroborus” finished, it was time for the Mastodon to take over, and what a performance they put on.
Being from Atlanta and a life long fan of the band, I’ve lost count at how many times I’ve seen Mastodon live, but last night was one of the best sets I’ve ever seen from them. Throughout their seventeen song set list, they captivated the audience with their own brand of metal, and sounded as close to the records as humanly possible. Throw in the amazing light show and the fan’s screaming every word, and it was truly an all encompassing performance. The guys performed hits from their ever growing catalog, and while some fan favorites weren’t on there, we were lucky enough to hear two new songs that sounded powerful as hell. Troy, Brent, Bill and Brann have basically created a whole new sound for metal in their fourteen year career, and as we witnessed last night, their live show just gets stronger and stronger. It’s nearly impossible to follow Gojira live, but Mastodon definitely held their own, and it made this hometown kid from Atlanta extremely happy.
As we left the venue, every fan had a smile on their face and the main reaction was “Holy shit!” If I had to sum up the show in two words, that’s exactly what comes to mind. With these three stellar bands on the bill, I knew it was going to be good, but holy shit, it was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. See for yourself why in the clips below!
