Lord Dying: “Poisoned Alters” Album Review by Jamie Lee!

The primal chug that underscores each of Poisoned Alters‘ eight tracks isn’t surprising, given Lord Dying’s 2013 debut, Summon the Faithless. Regardless, it is no less unnerving. Like bone through a wood-chipper, the unrelenting grind of distorted guitar powers these eight tracks with abandon. And while the intensity is enough to propel this album on its own, Lord Dying temper the sludge with well-formed compositions rooted in aggressive groove.

The title track roller-coasters from meaty verse to galloping chorus, and songs like “A Wound Outside of Time” and “An Open Sore” impress with a pure concentration of power from beginning to end. It is all riff, but even so, there is an elastic tension and release that breathes throughout Poisoned Alters like a healthy lung responding to interval training with the devil himself.

Sophomore slumps be damned. A year-and-a-half on the road has benefited Lord Dying, and judging by Poisoned Alters, they are ready to take on the world.

Poisoned Alters will be out January 27 on Relapse Records.
