Doing time in both Phillip H. Anselmo & The Illegals and Superjoint, drummer Jose Manuel “Blue”Gonzalez is pretty much living the heavy metal dream these days for young guy in America SkullsnBones.com had some phone time with “Blue” to talk metal, being a Hispanic-American and all things Phil.
Blue! How goes it?
Things are good here. Thanks!
I have to say, the new Illegals album with Phil, Choosing Mental Virtue As A Virtue, is great. You can definitely hear some growth between this one and the first record.
Thanks. Yeah, I really feel the same way.I think the writing is pretty strong and solid and we were really hitting it on all cylinders in the studio.
So, working with Phil Anselmo in not just one band but two must be pretty surreal for you.
No kidding, huh? It’s amazing, alright. I was pretty young when I started playing with Phil. I had only started playing drums when I was 13, and five years later at 18, I’m playing with Phil Anselmo!
Are you going to be heading out on the road and tour behind the album?
Definitely. Really excited to play these songs live in front of an audience.
Do you ever feel any pressure in the metal scene for being Hispanic-American?
No, never! In metal no one cares what tour nationality is or where you were born. We only care about the music. (Laughs) OK, and we all know we’re all pretty much asses to each other in metal but that’s a guy thing!
Do you have a favorite between Superjoint and being in the Illegals?
Mannnnnnnnnnnnnn! Really? Hell, no! That’s like choosing which child is your favorite! I love being in both bands and playing with Phil. No way I could pick a favorite!
Phillip H. Anselmo & the Illegals will be on the road this year. Do your ass a favor and go see them. And if you haven’t heard the new album, Choosing Mental Illness as a Virtue, it is out now on Housecore Records and you can buy it here!
