In today’s, From The Vault, we want to wish a very Happy Birthday to two musicians celebrating birthday’s today:
Today marks the 50th birthday of Lars Johan Yngve Lannerbäck, better known as Yngwie Malmsteen, The Swedish guitarist created his first band, Track On Earth at the age of 10, with one of his school friends and changed his name to reflect his mother’s maiden name (by adding an e, as well as adding an I and W to Yngve). Growing up, Yngwie was heavily influenced by classical music and came to the United States after Mike Varney, President of Shrapnel Records had gotten hold of a 1978 demo tape Malmsteen had played on. Yngwie made his debut on the self-titled Steeler album along with bassist Rik Fox (W.A.S.P., SIN, Surgical Steel), singer Ron Keel (Keel) and drummer Mark Edwards. After Steeler, Malmsteen joined Graham Bonnet’s Alcatrazz for two albums before embarking on a successful solo career. His last album, Spellbound was released in 2012 and he was recently interviewed on the Power Metal episode of Metal Evolution.
Philip Hansen Anselmo is celebrating his 46th birthday today. Born in New Orleans, LA, Phil who has often noted in interviews that he was quiet and secluded as a child, got his start in a few bands (mostly cover bands with some original music) before joining Pantera in 1987. While Pantera started out as a glam band, they dropped their glam image for a more scaled down look and recorded several studio albums until their breakup in 2003. Phil has been involved in several projects and while there has been speculation of a Pantera reunion, Vinnie Paul has stated he is not interested and refuses to speak to Phil Anselmo ever again. Anselmo also owns his own record label, Housecore Records.
