The awesome God Forbid released their latest album, “Equilibrium”, a few weeks ago via Victory Records and the response has been amazing! Fans proved their love for the band by putting them on the Billboard Top 200 charts and I couldn’t be happier for the guys! I highly suggest that you go check them out on their upcoming tour with Overkill, Diamond Plate and SuidAkra! God Forbid NEVER disappoints live!
Last week I got to speak with vocalist Byron Davis about the new record, the fans, upcoming tours and much more! Check it out below!
“Equilibrium” was just released and it was announced that you guys landed at #156 on the Billboard Top 200. With this being the first record with Matt, the label change, and everything else going into it, how does it feel when you hear you guys landed on the Billboard Top 200?
That was great man. It’s definitely a great feeling to be recognized for all of the hard work that you do. We put everything into the new album, so I’m glad people are actually picking it up and enjoying it.
It’s an awesome record! Over the past year or so it seems like there is a whole new energy coming from the God Forbid camp. Would you agree with that?
Definitely. The band has really been revitalized. We’ve been doing this a long time and the fact that we can still get together and write music that we enjoy together is a great feeling. Sometimes when you do something for a long time you’ll eventually get tired of it, but that’s not the case for us. There’s a lot of good things in the works and we plan to take full advantage of the new opportunity that was given to us.
“Equilibrium” definitely showcases each member of the band very well, and I think it’s the most complete record musically from you guys. Going into writing the record and hearing it now that it’s out, is this exactly what you envisioned for the new album?
I kind of had a vision of where I wanted the record to go and it actually came out better than I hoped it would. I know the other guys feel the same about the album as well. You always plan to outdo yourselves and when it happens, it’s pretty fucking cool. Plus, the response has been overwhelming. A lot of people are getting into it and they feel what we are saying and I couldn’t ask for much more than that. Anytime you put your heart and soul into something and people appreciate it, it really means a lot.
I’m glad it was you who is doing the interview, because the lyrics on this album really stand out to me. You guys have always had a strong message and have been very honest in your words, but this record’s lyrics are much more spiritual than anything you’ve done before. How did that come about?
We’ve lived a long time man (laughs). We’ve seen a lot of things go on, we’ve lost several friends for various reasons, and sometimes you need to stop and think about what you do as a person and how it affects others ya know. I think we’ve each reached a certain point in our lives where we individually never thought we’d be able to see. It’s a good feeling to be where we are right now and to look back at our lives and to look toward the future. At the same time, we are not trying to preach spirituality or religious beliefs to anyone by any means, it’s just how we see things. If some people agree with that, they are agree with that. If they don’t, they don’t ya know. At the end of the day, it was music written from the heart and the feeling of being inspired by being alive to have the opportunity to write music and be creative. It’s pretty special.
Speaking about being honest, God Forbid released the “Where We Come From” video, which portrays how the band has normal jobs along with playing music. As we all know, you’re not the only group that does this. Do you think it’s important and/or a positive thing to have that home base and that structured job, along with the band?
To be honest, I’m at work right now (laughs). I think it’s important to be honest with yourself though. Yea, it’d be nice not to have to work a nine to five job, but that’s just not the reality of our situation right now. We need the jobs in case we have to go on the road. We are grown men, so we know what it takes to survive. With the economy that way it is, we are going to do what we have to in order to survive. We’ve always worked within our means ya know. We do what we can and we do it the best we can. If people can’t respect that than to hell with them.
Well this month you will have to take off from the job because you are hitting the road with Overkill very soon! How much of the new material can we expect to hear on the road? Any surprises?
We want to play as much of the new material as possible, without alienating the old school God Forbid fans. As this point we have six full lengths out there, so we are going to try and fit in as much as we can from each album. It’s going to be interesting man. Obviously we want to promote the new record, but with the shorter time slot and other obstacles, we’ll see how it turns out. We will probably switch it up a lot too, but nothing is for sure right now. I can’t wait to get out there though man. Touring is my favorite part of writing a new record. You get to go out there and perform for people and give them a good night out from their daily lives. That’s what this band has always been about. Do what you do to survive, but on your down time have some fun ya know. As a fan, if your down time is going to a God Forbid show, you can expect everything from us every time and we hope that we brought some joy into your life for that moment.
I know you’ve played some hometown shows already, so how was it to get back out there and play the new material for the fans? How did the new stuff feel to play live?
It was definitely good to get back out there man. I’m not going to lie to you though, it was a little weird since we hadn’t been on the stage in a while. I had to get my chops back up ya know, public speaking and all that. It was great to see that people are still interested in God Forbid and what we bring to the table. It gave us an extra kick in the ass to get more lined up for the fans. We got the cool Overkill tour, but we got much more in the works. We are just trying to stay as busy as possible right now and travel as much as possible.
God Forbid has played all over the world throughout your career, but is there one certain place that you really hope to bring your music to that you haven’t had the chance yet to?
We’d really like to get to South America, Russia, and Asia. We’ve never been to those three markets, so I think it’d be really great to get out there. We’ve traveled all over the world, like you said, but to bring God Forbid to those areas would be awesome. It’s all a process though man. Nothing good comes quickly, and if it does, it’s not going to last.
My friends and I have always been huge supporters of the band here in Atlanta and the conversation still comes up quite a bit while listening to your music. So I’ll ask you… Why isn’t God Forbid bigger than they are? What the hell is wrong with people?
I don’t know man! (laughs) I think it maybe might be blind ignorance, I really don’t know. It dumbfounds me too! We try everything we can to prove to people that we are 100% real and honest, and I guess some people just don’t get that. People nowadays have a short attention span, so you gotta jump in there, smack them around and hope they remember you. All we can do is keep putting out music from our heart and hope people catch on. It’s been fifteen years so we aren’t new to the game. Our true fans know us for who we are and hopefully the rest of the people will catch on as we keep going on as a band. That’s all we can hope for!
I totally agree man. Do you have anything else you’d like to say or relay to those loyal God Forbid fans out there?
Yea, definitely keep hitting us up on Facebook and Twitter. We love the feedback and we try to bring you the latest news as quickly as possible on those sites. We also got some video footage being put together here and there for a possible future DVD release and new tours will be announced soon, so keep your eyes and ears open. Obviously, come check us out on the road and let’s party God Forbid style. I’ve said it time and time again, we aren’t going anywhere, and here we are fifteen years later, so thanks for all the love throughout the years. We are here because of you and we are truly grateful. Thank you all!
