Unfortunately for my neighbors – I live on the third floor – there’s nothing like the death metal polka and the dancing it induces to keep them up at night.
As expected of the endlessly touring folk metal masters Finntroll, Natten Med De Levande Finntroll, a recording of their performance at Amderstam’s Melkweg Concert Hall on September 20, 2008, is an infectious 19-track experience that includes material from five of their first albums.
The set begins with a couple of tracks from their breakthrough album Jakten’s Tid, then transitions to focus on Nattfodd. The beginning of “Nedgang,” from Ur Jordens Djup, hits hard and leaves me jumping around like a fool. I couldn’t be happier with the set list, given that at the time of this recording, their last two albums, Nifelvind and Blodsvept, had not yet been released. The improvisational instrumental transition between “Ursvamp” and “ Eliytres” is an enjoyable one. This album will be enjoyed by older fans but is also a great album for new listeners who may not have been exposed to their older material. My one and only complaint with this album is the limited interaction with the audience between songs.
The recording was mixed and mastered by Mikko Karmila and Mika Jussila. They did a great job with this. On some live recordings, the instruments seem to muddle each other, but not on this one. The recording is surprisingly clear, and the instruments can be identified with no one overpowering the others.
Maybe I do have one additional complaint. I’m upset that this was recorded in 2008 and we are just now getting our hands on it!
The track list of Natten Med De Levande Finntroll is as follows:
2. “Slaget Vid Blodsälv”
9. “Jaktens Tid”
11. “Korpens Saga”
13. “Fiskarens Fiende”
15. “Försvinn Du Som Lyser”
16. “Midnattens Widunder”
17. “En Mäktig Här”
18. “Det Iskalla Trollblodet”
Natten Med De Levande Finntroll will be released on June 17 via Spinefarm Records.
