Danish death metal group, Ferocity released their new album, The Hegemon on March 13th, 2020 via Immigrant Species Records.
Ferocity‘s new record is more than just an onslaught to the senses. Yes, it’s aggressive as hell, but unlike a lot of death metal these days there is an authenticity to the sound that is more than just sharp tones in your face. “The Hegemon” is a really nice mix of traditional death and melodic death metal styles and maybe a little grind in there for kicks.
Overall the record’s sound is massive and full but I am missing the bass. You can hear it, but not enough, and I feel like it would bring the whole album to another level. The bass is playing the traditional role so I guess it’s not that big a deal. The drums sound great and I’m really glad that they aren’t overplayed as so often you’ll find in these genres.
The guitars sound thick and heavy which I think plays well into the overall authenticity sound I was talking about before. It’s nice to experience death metal this way. It’s not too dark, it’s just big.
The vocals are special in that there are several well-executed styles to experience. From growls and screams to gutteral brutality there’s a lot to enjoy.
All the songs on The Hegemon are good but if I have to pick I’d say standout tracks for me are “Embracing The End Times”, “The Silent Agitation”, and “Trembling The Gates Of Treason.”
All in, this is a fantastic record. If you’re a fan of death metal you need to spin this at least once.
