Destruction: "Under Attack" Album Review By Jason Z!

The original thrash movement holds a special place in my heart, since I was a teenager when it was first coming to light. Yes, I am old enough to have owned and heard Kill ‘Em All before Metallica was a household name!  It was an awesome time for metal, and bands from all over the world brought forth their talents, including Germany’s Destruction. I’ve been a fan since I first heard “Bestial Invasion” on a compilation album entitled Speed Kills back in the mid ’80s. It was raw and fresh sounding at the time, and the band continue that legacy with their fourteenth album, Under Attack.

The title track opens up with an acoustic intro, then launches into an all-out, neck-breaking thrash fest! The band sounds energized and refreshed right from the gate and doesn’t let up for the entire album. Vocalist/bassist Marcel “Schmier” Schirmer‘s snarling vocals are a trademark of the Destruction sound, and he fucking crushes it! Drummer Wawrzyniec “Vaaver” Dramowicz is a monster on the skins, and lone guitarist Mike Sifringer shows his worth with killer leads and a maelstrom of layered, razor-sharp riffs. “Generation Nevermore” is not only brutal, but catchy as hell, too. “Dethroned” follows a similar formula, and the guitar breaks are killer. “Getting Used To The Evil” is darker, but it is still catchy. The tempo changes, tribal drums, and guitar are absolutely brilliant! “Pathogenic” is furious thrash! It never lets up, and, once again, the guitars are nothing short of excellent. “Elegant Pigs” is a furious sounding song, with Schmier’s vocals almost resembling a Peace Sells … But Who’s Buying era Dave Mustaine. “Second To None” has a classic thrash sound that could have come straight from the ’80s, yet it has the production of today to make it sound awesome. “Stigmatized,” the album’s closer, takes the album out on a high note, and it may be one of Destruction‘s best songs ever. It harnesses the power of the riffs, and completely beats you senseless in the process.

Destruction are here to prove that the modern thrash movement isn’t simply a throwback, but it’s a force to be reckoned with today.

Under Attack is out now on Nuclear Blast Records. Buy it here!
