Cloudkicker: “Live With Intronaut” Album Review by Jamie Lee!

It’s easy to assume that some cheap name-dropping is going on when an album entitled Live with Intronaut  is credited to Cloudkicker instead of Intronaut. Fortunately, that isn’t the case with this release.

Live with Intronaut is a collaboration between Cloudkicker, the one-man musical project of Ben Sharp, and Intronaut’s Sacha Dunable, Dave Timnick, Danny Walker, and Joe Lester. During an early 2014 tour on which Intronaut served as Sharp’s backing band, the collective made a stop at The Fathom Tree Recording Studio in Austin, Texas. They set-up, plugged in, then played their setlist live from start to finish with the record button firmly pressed.

It doesn’t come as a surprise that the album favors the Los Angeles’ prog-metal maestros’ trademark sound, albeit murkier. Sharp leads the collective through nine instrumentals that are tightly wound and intense. It opens with the one-two punch of “Subsume Part I” and “Subsume Part II,” and tracks like the the bombastic “Dysphoria” deliver with guitars that pierce the rumbling chug. The drifting “You and Yours” provides a breath of cool air, and it retains the tension that permeates the rest of the album despite its slower pace.

Live with Intronaut delivers exactly what the title implies. It is a satisfying collaboration between Cloudkicker and one of the most forward-thinking prog metal bands playing today.

Live with Intronaut is out now on Century Media Records.
