The six-song Evolve EP is rife with pain and agony; it is a vicious pummeling that doesn’t let up until the album-closing “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” But to appreciate any relief, you have to pay first, and Chelsea Grin dole out plenty of unrelenting bass-bomb deathcore. Laser crisp guitar work enlivens the blackened “The Second Coming” and the dizzying “S.H.O.T.,” and symphonic tentacles pull the listener into the heaving maelstrom of “Lilith.”
Chelsea Grin have outdone themselves on Evolve. There is dark fury living in these five tracks; it is a brief, poisonous taste that is bitter, lasting, and conjures a vicious thirst for more.
Evolve is out now on Artery Recordings/Razor & Tie.
