You know, listening to Chelsea Grin’s new album, Ashes to Ashes, makes me appreciate good deathcore even more. I’m not even kidding. It makes me jam out to the bands who do this leagues better than Chelsea Grin ever will.
You know what this record sounds like? Born of Osiris songs that were thrown away because they weren’t good, and Chelsea Grin went dumpster diving for “new” material, found these songs and made them worse. I can guaran-fucking-tee you this is due to guitarist Jason Richardson deciding he’s better off in rookie ball with these hacks than with the perennial all-stars. There’s one admittedly well-done riff right at the beginning of “Playing With Fire,” but it feels like the band is taunting the listener with it, saying, “We know how to be at least passably decent, but that would lose us fans and money, so we just won’t.” Not only that, but a band like Chelsea Grin growling “Stop living like a puppet” and even calling a song “Sellout” just feels like a joke no one is laughing at. Speaking of lyrical mastery, how many times did we really need to be reminded in one song that you “set fires just to watch them burn?” (The answer is no less than five, by the way). If anyone in Utah has problems with an arsonist, I’d suggest questioning Chelsea Grin regarding their whereabouts.
My recommendation: if you really must own Ashes to Ashes, steal it. Please. Take money out of this band’s pocket. Use it to support musicians like Deep In Hate who are doing good things and making good music. Better the world by causing Chelsea Grin to break up. Please, for the love of all-that-is-or-potentially-might-be holy, do not spend your hard-earned money on this crap.
