Behemoth: “Devil’s Conquistadors” Book Review by Jason Zins!

Behemoth are black metal legends. We, at Skullsbones.com, recognize this almost daily. They are innovators who are producing such quality music and live shows that they are constantly expanding their audience worldwide. And they are doing everything their way. No ballads, no bullshit, just pure, kick-ass metal.

Frontman Adam “Nergal” Darski has brought this band from the dark recesses of Poland to the forefront of extreme metal, but it hasn’t been without trials and tribulations. “Devil’s Conquistadors,” written by Lukasz Dunaj, tells the story from beginning.  If you are expecting juicy gossip and loads of TMZ style personal information, you will be sorely disappointed. This 490-page, hardcover book tells the complete history of Behemoth, the band, and it doesn’t focus entirely on individuals or their personal lives. It details their growth from their early black metal roots to their worldwide dominance from the front row. The story is simply amazing.

The book documents the highs and lows of the early days and mixes in some pretty humorous stories, like Nergal burning himself trying to breathe fire. The author does a great job interviewing all previous band members (Baal, Havok, Les, etc.) and some of Behemoth‘s old competitors, such as Rob Darken from Graveland.  The interviews with Nergal, Inferno, Orion and Seth really illustrate the story behind the hard work they have put in to get where they are today. Nergal and company have literally traveled through hell, from battling religious zealots to the front man’s personal battle with Leukemia, and the details of their triumphs and tribulations, along with the photos presented here, are nothing short of amazing.

Once I started reading “Devil’s Conquistadors,” I couldn’t put it down. Behemoth are a true success story attributed to the hard work and dedication of these blackened souls. This book is a dedication to that success!  Now, I can’t wait for Nergal’s “Confessions of a Heretic: The Sacred and Profane” coming next month!

Devil’s Conquistadors” is out now on Metal Blade Records. Order it here!
