Ardra: “Unto Leviathan” Album Review

Ardra are a Bay Area band who write an interesting blend of deathcore with a bunch of outside influences, including black and melo-death. Their debut album, Unto Leviathan, has everything a deathcore fan could ask for, from chugging heavy riffs, to killer vocals and slamming breakdowns.

Unto Leviathan wil leave you with a sore neck; the whole album is very heavy and each track is written in a way that just makes you want to bang your head. Ardra also do a great job of working in these eerie guitar melodies over the really intense breakdowns and throughout other sections of each song, similar to the likes of Carnifex. For a band who got their name from Star Trek, these guys have some pretty brutal lyrics. The song “Walk With Fire” describes becoming one with fire and walking away while others burn alive.

Ardra write in a way that is extremely smooth in the sense that everything fits together and flows naturally from one section to the next. Unto Leviathan definitely doesn’t sound a debut record because of how well it’s put together and produced. it sounds more like they’ve been around for a while and are pretty well experienced.

One issue I have with the album is that a lot of the songs kind sound similar, but that’s a problem with a lot of deathcore in my opinion. This doesn’t really take away from enjoyment Unto Leviathan, but this isn’t really an album I’d want to listen to multiple times in a row.

Ardra’s Unto Leviathan is an intense and really interesting sound for deathcore.

Unto Leviathan is out now. Buy it here!
