Veterans of the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise, lovingly referred to as “Survivors,” are cultish when it comes to the annual event. The camaraderie is unmatched, and most hold this voyage as the “must-attend” metal event of the year. In fact, banter about the next year’s lineup begins the day the cruise docks … and is met for months by responses from our friends at 70,000 Tons of “Sooooon.”
We are just few months from the cruise, and there hasn’t been an announcement yet. As you can imagine, there are metalheads from around the world that are becoming restless. The Facebook group is a running rampant with memes highlighting the lack of line-up calls, some jovial and others, well, let’s just say a bit passive aggressive.
Team SkullsNBones isn’t worried, though. Photo Editor Jason Carlson and I have a spot on the boat, and quite frankly, we don’t care who is on the lineup. In the years that we have attended, we haven’t been disappointed. There have been favorites (Meshuggah, Swallow the Sun, Dark Tranquillity, Nile), and new finds (Bodyfarm, Kalmah, Evergrey), so we trust that the Skipper and his team will do us right, regardless of when the announcements begin.
Despite our comfort with the forthcoming lineup announcements, we will jump at the chance to let you know who is joining the fray on this tenth anniversary jaunt to Cozumel, Mexico. Stay tuned, and we will keep you up to speed on all things 70,000 Tons of Metal.
The 2020 installment of 70,000 Tons of Metal will take place January 7-11 on the Independence of the Seas. It will travel to Cozumel, Mexico, and back, and it will feature 60 metal bands playing twice over the course of the trip. For more information, visit www.70000tons.com !
