70,000 Tons Of Metal: Day 1 Recap

The 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise is truly something unique. Not only are there attendees from around the globe, but many have taken the cruise multiple times. They form a tribe of metal heads that congregate each winter on an enormous ship with their favorite bands.

Despite some timing and technical issues, including power on a couple of the stages, the first day was a success. Fans enjoyed standout performances from Exhumed, Swallow the Sun, Kreator, Destruction, and Enslaved. Insomnium closed out its set with a guest appearance from Dark Tranquillity‘s Mikael Stanne.

Not only is the music on the stage, but it is all encompassing, and it is impossible not to bump into artists rambling about the ship, hanging at the bars, or taking in shows. Cannibal Corpse‘s own Corpsegrinder held court in the bar, laughing, joking, and graciously making time for fans.

It is worth noting that this cruise isn’t for the faint of heart. It is a marathon, with shows running from 10 a.m. until 6 a.m. the following morning. It’s a lot of fun, but wow, it is exhausting.

We are pleased to provide a few teaser photos from yesterday by Jason Carlson with more to come once we are back in the States.
