Killer Be Killed will be unleashing their highly anticipated album on May 13th via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. Max Cavalera, Greg Puciato, Dave Elitch and Troy Sanders all came together in the studio to create something unique for the metal world and it’s definitely going to have everyone talking once it hits the stores! I received this record over a week ago, and haven’t stopped listening since it first hit my ears. If you are looking for a record to sound like previous material from the guys in the lineup, you better think again. While there are hints of Soulfly/Cavalera Conspiracy, Mastodon, The Dillinger Escape Plan and The Mars Volta throughout the record, they’ve definitely created a whole new sound that all metal fans should be excited to hear! The more I listen to it, the more I love it, and that’s the true sign of an awesome record. Let me go into more detail on this powerful release below!
When they released the first two singles, “Wings of Feather and Wax” and “Face Down,” I must admit that I was blown away at what I was hearing. I had an idea of what this project might sound like, and these songs took it in a whole new direction. Now that I’ve heard the entire album, these were the best two songs to give fans a preview of what to expect, but there’s a whole lot more to love in other songs as well.
As with everything that Max Cavalera touches, his signature riffs are all over this record, and prove that the legend still has a lot to offer the metal scene. With accompanying guitar parts written by Greg Puciato, the six strings are loud and present throughout the entire release, and will rip your neck off at times with some of the break downs found in a few songs.
As for the bass guitar, Troy Sanders absolutely kills it in every song. We all know his talent from Mastodon, but you get to hear some new techniques from him in this album, and it’s just awesome. With his stellar bass playing and Dave Elitch‘s proficiency behind the kit, the rhythm section keeps the intensity alive and well throughout the entire record. So musically, this album stands on it’s own, but the most exciting thing about this project are the three vocalists, and they do not disappoint.
With Max, Greg and Troy all together on one project, we all wondered how the different vocals would sound, and here’s a spoiler, they are beyond awesome! Each vocalist sings on every song, and while that would be a bad idea for most side projects, it makes Killer Be Killed that much more special. Max brings his signature screams, Greg shows off his clean and chaotic levels, and Troy brings in his soothing and raw vocals in every track, and they mix so well that you think they’ve been playing together for years. With the mixture of the vocals and the music, you can only applaud these legends, because the songwriting is on point in every way, and showcases the talents of each member perfectly.
With all that said, the hype around Killer Be Killed is well deserved, because it delivers on all levels. Every member brings their best to the table, and have created a record that fans of all metal will truly enjoy. Stand out tracks for me include “Snakes of Jehova”, “Save The Robots”, “Fire To Your Flag” and “Forbidden Fire,” but honestly they are all exceptional in their own way. Whether you like their previous bands or not, this self titled release is a must hear for all metal fans, and a contender for album of the year.
